Brexit – A Form of New Cooperation or Nasty Divorce?
On November 15, 2018, our institute organized a roundtable discussion featuring Dr. Hartmut Mayer and Dr. Charles Enoch, professors at Saint Antony’s College, Oxford, and Szabolcs Takács, Secretary of State responsible for EU affairs.
The subject was the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union. The matter was all the more relevant as it was the day before that the British and European delegations agreed on the text of the Brexit deal that will be brought before the British Parliament in mid-December. Reflecting on the long way toward reaching an agreement, Dr. Enoch analyzed the different possible Brexit scenarios, while Dr. Mayer highlighted the strategical importance of the Northern Irish question, and the EU’s plans to avoid the imposition of a hard border between the UK and Ireland. Szabolcs Takács emphasized that Hungary accepts the democratic decision of the British people on leaving the EU, but he also expressed his hopes that the EU and Hungary in it will remain close partners in the future.
