“Cuba vs. Trump” roundtable discussion

On 1st March the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade (IFAT) organized a roundtable discussion with the title "Cuban-American Relations in the Shadow of Trump". The panelists of the event were Dr. András Drexler, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Hungary accredited to Havana, Márton Ugrósdy, Strategic Deputy Director of IFAT, Research Fellow for United States’ Affairs, and Dr. Sándor Gyula Nagy, Senior Research Fellow of the Institute responsible for Latin America, who was the event’s moderator as well.

The panelists of the roundtable addressed the issue of the half-century-old sanctions imposed by the United States on Cuba, the changes in the Cuban-American relationship during the Obama administration and the controversial steps taken since the inauguration of President Donald Trump. In response to questions from the audience, the participants expressed their views on Cuban-Hungarian bilateral relations, the Cuban engagement in the Colombian peace process, the possibilities for withdrawing the US sanctions and the expected generation-change of the Cuban Communist Party in April.
