IFAT publishes joint book with Azerbaijan’s Center for Strategic Studies

The Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade (IFAT) published a new book together with the Center for Strategic Studies (SAM) in Baku. The publication, entitled “The South Caucasus-Centered Transport Hub: The Crossroads of the East-West and the North-South Corridors” was presented at a book launch event in Budapest on 20th December 2017.

The event began with opening remarks from Mr Márton Ugrósdy, Deputy Director for Strategy at IFAT. It was followed by keynote speeches by Mr Zaur Shukurov, Counselor at the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Budapest, as well as by Mr Javid Valijev, Head of the Foreign Policy Analysis Department at the Center for Strategic Studies in Baku. All three speakers highlighted the positive nature of bilateral ties between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Hungary, who mark the 25th anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties this year. During the second half of the event, three chapters of the book were presented by their respective authors: Mr Mahir Humbatov (research fellow, SAM), Mr Gábor Braun (associate research fellow, IFAT) as well as Ms Diána Szőke (senior analyst, IFAT).

The publication explores the Europe - South Caucasus - Asia logistics, trade and energy nexus, showcasing the various geopolitical and economic factors affecting Azerbaijan’s aspirations to become a regional transport hub. This is particularly timely in light of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which will potentially bring the peoples of the three regions ever closer together.
