    KAS–IFAT Western Balkans Conference 2020

    On the 27th of February 2020, the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade (IFAT) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) held their annual Western Balkans Conference at the Andrássy University Budapest. This year, the event focused on the future of EU enlargement towards the Balkan region. The conference entitled “European perspectives for the Western Balkans – The EU’s credentials at stake?” offered high-level speakers a platform to showcase how their respective country or institution see the future of the European project in the Western Balkans.

    The strategy of the European Union regarding the Middle East

    The Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade, in cooperation with the French Institute of Budapest, hosted a roundtable discussion entitled “The strategy of the European Union regarding the Middle East” on the 24th of February, 2020. The event focused on the evaluation of the foreign policy of the EU in the region and on the challenges related to formulating a unified approach.

    Towards a More Effective European Foreign Policy? – Research Presentation at the IFAT

    On 19 February, the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade (IFAT) organized an event titled “Towards a More Effective European Foreign Policy – Research Presentation about the Qualified Majority Voting and the European Security Council”. The authors of the study discussed, among other things, the major challenges facing the European Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), the changing global political environment affecting the effectiveness of EU foreign policy, and the dynamics among Member States.

    On 6 February the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade (IFAT) hosted a roundtable discussion on current trends of regional and global value chains. Anikó Magasházi PhD, researcher of the Institute of Advanced Studies in Kőszeg, and László Kacsirek PhD, associate professor Corvinus University of Budapest were invited speakers of the event.

    After the book launch event on December 12 in Budapest, on December 18 the delegation of IFAT has presented the volume titled “Hungary and China: 70 years of diplomatic relations in a changing World” in Beijing as well, which was compiled to commemorate the 70th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Hungary and the PRC.

    Eastern Ukraine after the Normandy Summit

    On December 11, 2019, the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade (IFAT) held a roundtable discussion entitled “East-Ukraine after the Normandy Summit”. The participants included Sándor Ackermann (Analyst of IFAT), Anton Bendarzsevszkij (expert on the foreign relations of the post-Soviet region) and György Ilyash (Research fellow of IFAT). The event was moderated by Ferenc Németh, Research fellow of the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade. The topics of the event were the results of the Normandy Summit on December 10, and the current relations between Russia and Ukraine.

    70 years of diplomatic relations between Hungary and China – book launch

    Hungary was one of the first countries that recognised the People’s Republic of China on 3 October 1949, and three days later, on 6 October, the two countries established diplomatic relations. The Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade (IFAT) and the China-CEE Institute have jointly prepared a book for the anniversary that is published in Hungarian, in English and in Chinese. IFAT hosted the launch of the Hungarian edition on 12 December 2019 during which two of the authors, Mr. Gábor Péter Boros and Mr. Armin Vincentius Fábian presented the conclusions of their research.
